No matter how bad life gets, just remember that someone is actually being paid to say these things. It's an actual job, with a paycheque, from the government.
So RT made the word "based" not based? Seemed impossible, but nothing is for RT 🤪
> So RT made the word "based" not based?
The first article was mostly sarcastic, the second was about the FBI being politicized.
*nods* I also. 🧐 But I don't think those're the ones this particular employer is looking for.

Kaia is probably another good one. I can't imagine people banning her. I'm not sure where to place people from spinster because they would get ban, but flick from spinster is probably basically a hobbit if it weren't for the 'TERF' part. Lol.
Stereophonic and Newt are chill, I've had some great discourse from people there... but Newt can be a shitposter so I don't know. I just can't imagine that instance getting banned much.

No, it was because we'd import books from England and then waggle our dicks eastward while pirating them, because we're awesome. This horrified the England, who demanded a reciprocal copyright treaty.

Meanwhile, autumn: "season after summer and before winter, late 14c., autumpne (modern form from 16c.), from Old French autumpne, automne (13c.), from Latin autumnus (also auctumnus, perhaps influenced by auctus "increase"), which is of unknown origin, perhaps from Etruscan".

> How many wars have you guys won without sucking off the frogs btw?
We haven't lost a war to the French yet.
> that was already pretty much over by the time your elites let pearl harbour happen
Our elites *caused* Pearl Harbor, thank you, and it was an innovation: usually they have to sink a boat and lie about it.
> I guess your little civil war?
You people all clutchin' yer pearls over Oliver Cromwell. Meanwhile, when we do a war, we *really* do a war, and we also invent, because AMERICA, the concept of modern manufacturing, the repeating rifle, and the Gatling gun. The repeating rifle, by the way, was rejected by the army ("They'll waste ammunition") so the inventor put it into a suitcase, went to the White House, knocked on the door, and he and Lincoln went out back and shot it.
> If you're pro fed anti state anyway, that maybe could be considered a W?
The south is where the French settled and they still think of the ideal social structure as a white building where an aristocrat sips a drink served by someone wearing gloves and then all the other dirty peasants eating dirt in the dirt. The South needed to get got.

Not to distract from the American Supremacy bit, but the Spanish-American War, the Vietnam War, the first World War, all of the times they sank a boat and lied about it to get into a war, and the one time--the ONE TIME--someone *does* blow up an American boat unprovoked...they lie about that to *prevent* a war. They *can't* resist an opportunity to lie about a boat.

The "American revolution" was little more than a Whig/Tory slap fight, and all the romanticizing is lame. You don't win a war starving in New English winters. George Washington a big liar.
> George Washington a big liar.
He crossed a frozen river on Christmas to kill Germans. This is what really matters.
Anyway, Lord William Pitt the Elder called it ahead of time:
> I know that the conquest of English America is an impossibility. You cannot, I venture to say it, you CANNOT conquer America...As to conquest, therefore, my Lords, I repeat, it is impossible. You may swell every expense, and every effort, still more extravagantly; pile and accumulate every assistance you can buy or borrow; traffic and barter with every little pitiful German Prince, that sells and sends his subjects to the shambles of a foreign country; your efforts are for ever vain and impotent—doubly so from this mercenary aid on which you rely; for it irritates, to an incurable resentment, the minds of your enemies—to overrun them with the sordid sons of rapine and plunder; devoting them and their possessions to the rapacity of hireling cruelty! If I were an American, as I am an Englishman, while a foreign troop was landed in my country, I never would lay down my arms, never! never! never! ...I call upon the honour of your Lordships to reverence the dignity of your ancestors, and to maintain your own. I call upon the spirit and humanity of my country to vindicate the national character. I invoke the genius of the constitution. From the tapestry that adorns these walls, the immortal ancestor of this noble Lord frowns with indignation at THE DISGRACE OF HIS COUNTRY! In vain he led your victorious fleets against the boasted Armada of Spain; in vain he defended and established the honour, the liberties, the religion, the Protestant religion of his country, against the arbitrary cruelties of Popery and the Inquisition.
I have a time travel project on it.
Afghanistan defeated America then.

> Haven't seen enough evidence to say they caused it,
Churchill kept complaining that we were only sending guns instead of dudes and that we were also not sending enough guns. FDR provoked the Japanese repeatedly, including things like sending a delegation to iron things out, and the diplomats pumping it up to the Japanese press and then not showing up.

I see you've got the Southern Abridged Edition of the history of the Civil War, where mean ol' Lincoln came down to slap the definitely-not-French aristocrats for not letting him become the eternal king of America. It's a better story than the Northern Abridged Edition where Lincoln saved everyone from racism by personally punching rednecks in the face, don't get me wrong, but we had invented writing by then. Pass the mustard.

I agree, I think the British left over internal politics more than the starving loser militia. They had the numbers to win handedly, just not the political support.
> starving
We were effectively a massive farm.
> They had the numbers
This is alleged; the truth is that they could have sent every soldier in their empire without making much of a dent. We had about 2.1m people in the US, and they sent 25k soldiers, which was as many as they could send without hiring Germans, of which they hired 30k. Pitt the Elder was correct: it was unwinnable. Our supplies were on the farms the militia came from, and they had to ship supplies in. An army marches on its stomach.
>Why would you fight the fr*nch when you're too busy working their shafts and licking their balls

> In terms of winning the war for side or another, yeah it's kinda retarded to be providing military vehicles for your alleged enemy.
The public sentiment was that a war in Europe was stupid; the elite sentiment was that Germany and Russia (allies for the first couple of years) were going to drink all the wine. We didn't have an enemy, we had factories. At any rate, we'd embargoed Hitler and Stalin starting long before that.

I've heard more than I care to know about it tbh, my view is that most southerners were just defending themselves and it was clearly never about slavery as the north ended that later than the south did.

EVERY TIME YOU TALK, ALL I HEAR IS "SIXABONG SIXABONG"
> some bitch no showing on a date
A public snub after all of the frozen accounts and business seizures and whatnot? A public snub in *Japan*? It's not the equivalent of a bitch no-showing, it's deliberately antagonizing them. Japan was, having modernized heavily and having beaten Russia a couple of decades earlier, banking really hard on its new reputation as the only Asian country on par with the European countries that had come in and dominated the continent. China was basically it as far as Asia was concerned until what Mao called the "Century of Humiliation". So in addition to doing everything we could *except* shoot at them, we started repeatedly insulting them. Then, the second Pearl Harbor happened, we declare war on Germany: FDR had been promising Churchill that we'd be there as soon as he could get public support.
> for the kamikazie attacks,
No, what prompted those was us sending all of our aircraft carriers and Japan running out of ammunition. It was just regular bombing before that.
> my view is that most southerners were just defending themselves
They shot first.
> it was clearly never about slavery
You will have to either take my word for it or keep reading. The TL;DR was given above: you have to have some facts carefully eliminated from your view.
See Judah P. Benjamin's speech to the goddamn Senate, right before he fled DC to join the new Confederate government: it was about slavery. "The wrongs under which the South is now suffering, and for which she seeks redress, seem to arise chiefly from a difference in our construction of the Constitution. You, Senators of the Republican party, assert, and your people whom you represent assert, that, under a just and fair interpretation of the Federal Constitution, it is right that you deny that our slaves, which directly and indirectly involve a value of more than four thousand million dollars, are property at all, or entitled to protection in Territories owned by the common Government. You assume the interpretation that it is right to encourage, by all possible means, directly and indirectly, the robbery of this property and to legislate so as to render its recovery as difficult and dangerous as possible; that it is right and proper and justifiable, under the Constitution, to prevent our mere transit across a sister State, to embark with our property on a lawful voyage, without being openly despoiled of it. You assert, and practice upon the assertion, that it is right to hold us up to the ban of mankind in speech, writing, and print, with every possible appliance of publicity, as thieves, robbers, murderers, villains, and criminals of the blackest dye, because we continue to own property which we owned at the time that we all signed the compact; that it is right that we should be exposed to spend our treasure in the purchase, or shed our blood in the conquest, of foreign territory, with no right to enter it for settlement without leaving behind our most valuable property, under penalty of its confiscation."
William Tecumseh Sherman was the head of LSU, though it was a military academy and wasn't called LSU. His remarks to Boyd over dinner, before the war broke out: "The North can make a steam engine, locomotive or railway car; hardly a yard of cloth or a pair of shoes can you make. You are rushing into war with one of the most powerful, ingeniously mechanical and determined people on earth - right at your doors. You are bound to fail. Only in spirit and determination are you prepared for war. In all else you are totally unprepared, with a bad cause to start with."
People keep repeating "Oh, it wasn't about that" but all of the people that started the war said what they were doing and why in public and it was written down by the doomed as well as the victors. *Why* that was the wedge issue is, as you can see from Benjamin's speech, money and power.
> the north ended that later than the south did.
Slavery was already illegal in the northern states; I don't know where you get this idea. Lincoln had promised that there would be no additional slave states: the reason that there was such a thing as a "slave state" was that there were states where slavery was illegal. In those states, it was illegal from the beginning, otherwise there wouldn't have been a three-fifths clause, drafted in order to get the slave states to not walk. (The northern states did not think the slaves should count when reckoning population for the purposes of representation in the House, the southern states wanted them to count. It was "make the numbers bigger" but the northern justification was that slaves were not citizens.) The things Judah P. Benjamin was complaining about were things like the Northwest Ordinance ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northwest_Ordinance#Prohibition_of_slavery ),
As I have just said, you have the Southern Abridged Edition. It requires the facts to be carefully edited and some very large ones to disappear. It's as bad as the "Lincoln, the gay anti-racist hero of freedom" story if your goal is accuracy.
I am all for a weaker federal government, but

I *still* don't know where you get the idea, because showing me that reinforces that you should not have that idea.
That is actually incorrect.
Delware and Kentucky had slaves until Dec 1865, months after the civil war.
> Hamlet: How absolute the knave is! We must speak by the card, or equivocation will undo us.
I think you're correct that it was a constitutional issue of state vs federal and the specifics were coincidental; the cotton gin effectively did more to end transatlantic slavery.

Indeed; apropos has some really interesting observations about Methodists and Quakers targeting slavery because the slaves were owned by Papists.

joker-stop-the-press.gif

I took a class on formal logic way, way back in college. (I think I learned more about programming in that class than I did in the stupid Java class.) So the professor says something that I really liked: he said "Every sentence is, on some level, a lie." He didn't mean a literal intent to deceive, but that imprecision in language necessitates a fuzzy interpretation: you can't read more precision into something than is intended. He illustrated this by providing an obviously imprecise definition of the subject of a sentence: "the first noun in the sentence". And then he gave a counterexample. So he revised it to "the thing the sentence is about" and gave a counterexample, and so on. The intent was to drive home the difference between natural language and formal logic. I liked it; most of the other students in the class thought it was confusing. But they were teenagers and I have a genetic predisposition to thinking that kind of thing is fun.
Now, here we are, and I have made a general assertion: "Slavery was already illegal in the northern states; I don't know where you get this idea." That was part of a point that took two paragraphs to make. So you have brought up Delaware (and, erroneously, Kentucky, but I am using the inferred amended version); it not only has nothing to do with the point, but I am speaking generally, and the point was that it was kind of ridiculous to say that slavery persisted in the north longer than in the south. An incorrect general statement was made as part of an argument, and I insisted that it was incorrect. Does adding "except Delaware" make any sort of difference?
One thing you have to understand about writing is that if you are making a point, you cannot start rocking back and forth and saying that we're definitely gonna miss Wapner if you want to ever get to the point. You are trying (intentionally or not) to create a world where people are assumed to be too stupid to understand what they are being told. This is fine if you live in that sort of environment, but I'm here and (generally) I'm talking to people that I assume are able to understand when I speak. Posts can't be as long as this one is in order to make very small points.
So, I don't know how your education was, but high school is just terrible in the US, and we still got, in the physics class, some stress on the difference between accuracy and precision, and why you want to convey how precise your instrument is and the nature of significant digits. If you've got a digital readout and it says "19.4", or you have a dial and the closest tick is "19.5", you make a note of this when you're writing your results. And I think, if I've correctly guessed your age, you've grown up in a world where you are inundated by precise-*looking* numbers, and I think, even if you never learned directly by having the point hammered home in some class or when working with someone, the nature of measurement becomes clear to you at some point. Even idiots figure this out: a woman on the internet (likely a man because I don't think women usually ask this question) asks a man the size of his penis and he knows that he wants to measure it in a warm room, he will generally round up; he will also usually add some, because lying is even more intuitive than fudging the numbers.
These are instruments designed for some tolerances, there's a margin of error specified by the manufacturer if professionals are supposed to use a tool to measure anything. Einstein's relativity paper, the first one, he spends most of the damn paper talking about how to measure the length of a rod. Precision isn't a trivial thing.
So the reason for the stress on describing the margin of error, you see, is so that, if your results are used by someone else, they know their own margin of error: it's going to get multiplied by yours.
Now, perhaps this is my error: perhaps I have failed at the important task of specifying how precisely you should interpret things that I say. I did not specify the precision because the precision is as expected from any other random sample of extemporaneous prose. Especially when speaking in generalities, this is true, and in terms of the law, you are going to have to speak in generalities. If I were to say that it's illegal to shoot a man the US and that the lone exception is self-defense, you can find exceptions to that in every state. It's going to be wrong in every state; it is, on some level a lie. "Self-defense" is defined differently from state to state: does the Castle Doctrine apply? That is, is it legal to consider an incursion into your home an act of aggression that warrants a violent response? In some states, you have what is called a duty to retreat: that is, you are required to run if possible to avoid shooting, and in some states you can still use self-defense as a defense against a murder charge even if you could just walk away. In California, you have a duty to retreat in a public place, but it's totally legal to shoot an intruder. And although the sentence "It's illegal to shoot a man the US and that the lone exception is self-defense" is a lie, it is not an attempt to deceive, but if I have something to say about whether or not it is legal to shoot a man in the US--that is, if I am making a point, rather than trying to describe the exceptions to the law--then I am of necessity going to speak in generalities. It gets impossible to decipher the point of a wall of text when it's littered with digressions about exceptions, pointless paragraphs about self-defense and penis measuring and whether a woman on the internet is a woman or a man if she asks how big your dick is. Sometimes the digressions can be interesting but in every case, the digression distracts from the point. It is bad writing if it makes your point hard to understand.
So you have to take the point of the text; sometimes you can't, sometimes it's hard to tell, and you have to consider whether or not the detail you are seizing on is central to the point, or merely related, or perhaps just a parenthetical. It's generally understood that the extemporaneous blobs of text we pass around to each other on fedi are a conversation, and a conversation can drift: a tangent may prove to be more interesting than the previous thesis. But sometimes there is no point: someone is just pulling at a thread for no reason other than to try to pull at a thread. A lifetime of engaging in pointless, tedious tangents has taught me to recognize this. It is, in fact, required for those in my profession to know when they are engaged in a pointless yak-shave and to exercise judgment about when it is prudent to completely ignore the yak and come up with some other way to achieve the goal, or when the yak must be shaved, or if the goal is even worth it. This goes double for any case when you may have found a yak that you actually enjoy shaving. What I'm doing right now is bad writing, because it's full of unnecessary digressions and it spends entirely too many words to make a point that has no real bearing on the conversation, but it is at least fun to do. It's also--because it's nearly impossible to tell when a sufficiently motivated person will attempt to persistently tug at a thread that isn't even attached to the sweater--a pointless exercise. It requires me to expend excessive amounts of effort anticipating the actions of someone that is motivated to discard context and pointlessly antagonize. If I wanted that, I'd go back to Twitter; I'm here because it's hopefully possible here to have a friendly conversation instead of producing some kind of paranoid word-salad. A person is completely different if they are answering questions in a deposition; I think creating that kind of environment is actually evil, because it makes people worse, and it does this without a point. It makes it hard for friends to have conversations if the conversations take that sort of turn.
Now that all of that is out of the way, I will say this: slavery was already illegal in the northern states.
> Writing an entire OS on a language he created.
This is not quite as hard as it sounds. Anyone that can make sense of the hardware can do this, really. It's pretty cool to be able to do this with a compiler: Doug McIlroy designed TMG on a sheet of notebook paper by writing a compiler for TMG in TMG, then sat down and ran the compiler by hand, feeding it into itself, and the result was a program in assembly language that would compile programs written in TMG. This is also how John McCarthy did Lisp: he's got his famous single-page implementation of eval, and one of his students (Guy Steele

Terry did make the language expressive (it has a C-like syntax but is kind of like C64 Basic; this is deliberate) and he made the OS and its language really interesting: this isn't something you can do by ticking the "OS" and "self-hosted" checkboxes, right, the OS has a soul. That's wonderful. It is a pretty delightful system.
